1st Generation

Stanley Gordon & Eliza Sewell

Stanley Gordon Sewell was born in Essex, England in 1888 and immigrated to Canada in his early twenties. He settled in Alberta in 1909 and began working for CPR in Calgary, then worked at McHugh Ranches until he purchased the original Sewell farm land in Herronton, Alberta in 1916. In 1922 Gordon returned to England where he married Eliza Freeman. Eliza was born in Aldershot, England in 1887 and she immigrated to Canada with Gordon on his return in 1923. They lived on their farm in Herronton with their four children: daughter Doris, twin boys Dennis and David and youngest daughter Audrey.

Aside from farming grain, they raised turkeys having as many as 3,000 pure white turkeys in a flock at a time. In 1953 Gordon and Eliza retired from active farming but continued to live in Herronton, tending to a large garden and fruit orchard where they raised a variety of apples, plums and cherries unusual to Alberta.
